Welcome to Teta’s Grill in Flushing Michigan, where we’re proud to serve the authentic cuisine of Lebanon. This beautiful Mediterranean country is where my mother was born; in Lebanese the word “Teta” means Grandma, and this is what my mother was called. She was a single Mom, an amazing cook, and as her youngest son I learned everything I know about food from her. At Teta’s Grill, I honor this wonderful woman’s memory and passion for food by offering a menu compiled with her original recipes- made fresh for you every day.
My home country of Lebanon is located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and is about three-fourths the size of the state of Connecticut. This small but beautiful country has an extraordinary climate: within a 45-minute drive in winter, spring and fall, you can enjoy both swimming and skiing!
The Lebanese diet focuses on healthy and flavorful herbs, spices, and fresh ingredients. Mint, parsley, oregano, garlic, allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon are common seasonings. Bread, a staple food in Lebanon, is served with almost every meal, most often as a pita. It is so crucial to the Lebanese diet that some Arabic dialects refer to it as “esh”, meaning “life.”
In Lebanon the most widely celebrated Christian holidays are Christmas and Easter. Prior to a large chicken or turkey lunch, most guests are offered sugarcoated almonds to snack on. Homes are decorated with tinsel, and Christmas trees are often decorated with orange peels cut into various shapes. Easter is probably the most important holiday for Christians. Children may celebrate by playing a Lebanese Easter egg game called Biis-Biis, in which they compete to see who has the strongest, unbreakable hard-boiled egg. After a long day of excitement, families sit down to enjoy a lamb dinner. Labor Day (May 1) and Independence Day (November 22) are popularly celebrated national holidays. Both attract people of all ages to partake in food and festivities.
These are the traditions and memories we bring to Flushing, where we have lived for nearly 10 years and is the home we have come to love. I’m pleased and honored to serve Flushing and its surrounding communities with my mom’s delicious Lebanese food… we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy preparing it for you!
Sincerely,
Teta’s Family
